Amy Tischer | Web Graphics for GCU

Working in the online marketing department at Grand Canyon University has given me many opportunities to create web graphics for a variety of their online platforms. I’m consistently providing content for the gcu.edu homepage, updating event banners, creating general site graphics and providing social media graphics such as cover photos and twitter backgrounds.

Coding, templates, tables – oh my!

When I started at Grand Canyon University, I dived into email marketing and learned a ton about basic html, the trickiness of emails displaying correctly and  the beauty of Dreamweaver (don’t be hatin’!) – plus my photoshop skills have greatly improved!

I have worked on a variety of email campaigns from e-newsletters and promotions to student notices and invitations.

Going Away Party

Going Away Party

When I decided to throw myself a going away party I knew I really wanted to create a photobooth. The concept came from my abundance of business cards and old school postcards that I had laying around. Instead of just tossing {or recycling} the cards I chopped them up and made these paper chains for the backdrop. It turned out to be really fun way to capture all the people that came over to send me off! I made a few flags and my sister was able to bring down some dress up props from our stash at home.

A few other labels throughout the party so people knew what they were dealing with and a weeks worth of food prep and we had ourselves a party! It was so fun to organize the event {being your own client is the best!} and having all the little details was the icing on the cake.

iPhone/iPad App

iPhone/iPad App

SWRV is an interactive music video network where users are in control 24/7. They air multiple shows daily where users can control what music videos are played by voting and ranking for their favorite artists and videos. Users originally interacted only through the website or through texting and SWRV wanted to create a companion iPhone and iPad application where they could interact with every show, upload their own video submission, dedicate videos to their friends, comment on live shows, and more!

I started out with a site map for the app and detailed site maps for each show’s interaction. Each show basically needed two site maps in one since the app and the interaction available was different whether a show was live or not. After making sure I understood each voting process and interaction clearly the wireframing began. I delivered a fully annotated set of iPhone wireframes and created an additional set of iPad wireframes showing how each show would be laid out.

The most exciting part of this project was seeing the app go live. Go check it out, it’s real! SWRV had their own in-house graphic designer and developer to take control after the wireframes were delivered but throughout the wireframe process we were able to communicate often about all the details. It was definitely a great experience designing the user interaction for an iphone/ipad app – it’s the future!

Tea Light Holders

Tea Light Holders

This set of tea light holders were designed with patterns inspired from the desire for more natural elements to be found in the city atmosphere. They are made from extruded steel tubes and the patterns are 3D laser cut into them. The design challenge was to create a product that appealed to the clientele that a local Philadelphia home wares store, Fosters, catered to and the manufacturing capabilities of Amuneal Metal Manufacturing. This was an award winning design and has been featured on mocoloco.com and was admitted to Philly Heart Design Fall ’08.

Signage and Wayfinding

Signage and Wayfinding

Sherman Mills is located on the site of an old textile mill. The 32 different buildings have been retrofitted into apartments, studios, small businesses, and shops. The complexity and size of ‘The Mills’ produces a lot of confusion for people who are unfamiliar with the space and sometimes it’s hard to know what businesses reside there. This signage project was a first attempt at making the area more navigable. The map panel shown above was placed in four different locations around the area with a large map of the complex as well as a breakdown of each building, their floors, and the numbered spaces found on those floors. A corresponding pamphlet listed all the current occupants and their space number to allow visitors to look up where they were going on the map and navigate their way.

Additional signs were also created for the entryway to help people find the site off of the main road.

MIO

MIO

I was able to work at a fabulous design studio, called MIO, the summer between my junior and senior year of college. Their catch phrase is “Green Design for Everyone” and they have a focus on sustainable home furnishings. One of the neatest things about being there that summer was that they were asked to design a seasonal collection for Target. I was not only able to see the behind the scenes design processes of working with one of my favorite companies, but I too was able to help out with design concepts, user and material research, mock-ups, and development of the product line.

A personal task I was put in charge of that summer was to create some DIY step-by-step instructions for projects that could be created with MIO’s newest product they were offering, Loop By the Yard.  The consumer purchases the reversible Tyvek® material which is a poly-ethylene recyclable material. MIO provides the user with a pre-paid envelope to return any scraps from projects, or even the material itself after use, so that it can be recycled and therefore complete the loop. We wanted to jumpstart the user’s imagination with a few simple project ideas to get their creativity flowing with the material.

Another amazing opportunity I had while I was at MIO was to design a trade show booth for the company, Facarda. This is a company located in Colombia that produces cardboard packaging.  The booth was designed to easily be created using their own resources out of cardboard.  By utilizing simple cutting and scoring methods little windows for their products to be highlighted in were created.

Surprise Party Decor

Along with the invitations I created for my parent’s surprise 50th birthday party, I was able to create some party decorations. Using the leftover invitations I was able to create little party toothpicks, banners, and a cake topper. I also designed notecards for guests to write notes to my parents or a favorite memory.

These invitations were done for my parent’s surprise 50th birthday party! Done as postcards to save on postage we were able to send them out to several friends and family in all areas of the country. There were so many people that were able to come that my parents hadn’t seen in years!

Wireframes

I worked on a complete packet of wireframes for an ordering and tracking product. The product we were architecting will be singular yet have multiple types of users. Full wireframes were developed with 5 different user scenarios. Each user will have access to unique information applicable to their job as well as access to shared information across the users. The product includs an ordering element, product tracking, history, and trend forecasting.

Batey Bag

Batey Bag

This bag is a result of an inter-disciplinary project that started during a short term study abroad in the Dominican Republic.  While in the DR our diverse group had the opportunity to learn about the country, their people, and look for areas of opportunity where design was needed.  Our group became interested specifically with the MIRA health clinic who was doing on-site rapid HIV testing with people living in bateyes.  We were able to talk to the doctors while we were at the clinic to learn about the specific medical supplies they needed to carry with them and the importance of educating this specific group of people about the disease they were testing for.  For the next semester on campus I worked with a graphic designer, fashion designer, and textile designer to design and create this bag.

I designed and made this bag to feature specific compartments that would fit the rapid HIV tests, gloves, cotton swabs, paperwork, and additional supplies.
Graphic designer: educational booklet to be used during their health demonstrations
Fashion designer: utility belts for additional workers to help pass out condoms, bandaids, lollipops etc.
Textile designer: created and printed a custom textile design for our fabric

DR Study Abroad

During my senior year of college I had the opportunity to do a multi-disciplinary short term study abroad.  I spent 10 days in the Dominican Republic along with my fellow classmates.  While in the DR our diverse group had the opportunity to learn about the country, their people, and look for areas of opportunity where design was needed.  We also did several creative exercises while abroad.  Above is a wood block cut I created inspired by the many patterned wrought iron gates found throughout the island.  Also shown is a quick design challenge based on the work of Andy Goldsworthy, this was the first opportunity my multi-disciplinary design group had a chance to work together on a project.  We made a natural installation by weaving palm fronds around a deciduous tree.

Wedding Package

Wedding Package

This package was created for a friend’s wedding. I was able to do most of the paper goods beyond the save the date and invitations. Jumping off from their simple yet classy wedding invitations I incorporated a seal comprised of the bride and grooms initials into many of the pieces. I created the programs, the table numbers, seating cards, and a take-away poem for each guest. The bride’s tables were each named after a different poet. A love poem was selected for each table and a specific phrase from each poem was emphasized. The blue and yellow color scheme comes from the bride’s colors – navy for the bridesmaid’s dresses and yellow for the flowers.

Gym Bag Design

This design for a gym bag developed over the course of several months of research and development.  The target demographic was people who would be going to the gym before or after work and would be wearing one outfit into the gym and another outfit coming out.  The bag is created out of breathable antimicrobial material with a removable and washable lining.  There is a waterproof additional bag and an internal adjustable divider so the bag can work for whatever articles of clothing it has to handle.  The project also included a quick branding project producing the hang tags shown below.  This project was done with another student partner.

Table Runner

Table Runner

This was a study in making a product that is personally beautiful. To me, combining the natural and organic with the fabricated and structured creates beauty, especially when the organic overlaps with and envelopes the man-made. Used on a structured table, this organically shaped table runner softens structured lines to bring beauty to the table. When placed as if falling off the table, the pattern seems to envelop the rigid corner with natural shapes.

Alarm Clock

This project was a study in eco-friendly alarm clocks. By purchasing bases that snap together, and the individual modules for the features you desire to have, you can customize your clock to your preferences. The fabric sleeve allows the bases to be made from stamped metal with no finishing for easy recycling. The user has the ability to change the sleeve to update the product look. This project was done with two other student partners and in collaboration with SDI Technologies.

Lighting Concept

Lighting Concept

This hanging light is designed to utilize the two processes of fusing and slumping glass. This design has the appearance of an artistic blown glass piece but is accomplished through more reliable manufacturing processes. The bottom of each light is frosted to cut down on glare and the color bands would allow for design variations. This project was done with a student marketing partner and in collaboration with Artemide lighting, specifically for their Ron Rezek line.
